Meet the Board


Jennifer George:

Jennifer received her Bachelor in Science degree in Mathematics at Metropolitan State University and a Masters degree in English as a Second Language at St. Mary’s and at St. Cloud State University. She has been a high school math teacher for 10 years. She is an Educational Equity and Diversity level college instructor at St. Kate’s and a Gay Straight Alliance advisor. In her free time, Jennifer loves the Green Bay packers and likes geocaching and playing softball.


Mary E. Smits

Mary owns her own law firm; Smits Law Office L.L.C. She received her J.D. at William Mitchell College of Law and her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology/Communications at Metropolitan State University.  She has experience in family law, criminal law, and civil litigation. She was a Guardian ad Litem for Washington County and has been a contract attorney for Tubman Family Alliance advocating for victims of domestic violence. Mary’s experience includes 10 years as a staff attorney for Legal Assistance of Washington County and her previous and present experience as a private practitioner.  Her affiliations include the Washington County Bar Association, MN Women’s Lawyers, MN State Bar Association, WM Mitchell Third Party Caregivers Clinic, Board member of Globe University PAC, and founding member of the Legal Advice Clinic in Washington County. Mary is a very dedicated child advocate. She is also an avid Green Bay Packer fan who enjoys spending time with her family.


Michele Kurkowski:

Michele went to St.Bernards High School. From there she went to St. Paul Barber School and has worked in the industry for 28 yrs. Michele has managed a hair salon in Stillwater for 26 yrs. She was a camp counselor for the Y.M.C.A . day camp. She also taught baton twirling to children and coached baton at Park High School. She went to school at Westmore Academy in CA. for f/x. Michele has been in the filming industry for 12 yrs. doing f/x and producing. This lead her to her new passion of pyrotechnics. She is an award winning member of the Pyrotechnic Guild and is a license pyrotechnician. When not working she likes to work on art and go up north with friends.


Donna Herzfeld:

Donna is a Mary Kay director. Her career has grown over 33 years because she is a giving person. She has made it her personal mission to help young adults facing issues of drug and alcohol abuse. She has seen the toll childhood sexual abuse takes when the survivors turn to drugs and alcohol. She was a major supporter of CHILD Inc for many years before joining the Board. In her free time she goes to her cabin up north or enjoys a bonfire at home with her family.


Keli George:

Keli received her Bachelor in Science degree in Education at UW Whitewater as well as attending Minneapolis College of Art & Design. She has taught in public schools in Wisconsin and Minnesota over the past 25 years. She was a foster parent for teen girls and a co-director of a licensed foster treatment home. Keli has been a domestic violence advocate with Family Violence Network and YWCA Transitional programs and has been a child advocate since 1983. She has volunteered at the Sexual Violence Center, Head Start, Mission, and Kamp Kammer. Keli served on the board of Women In Poverty Initiative and Department of Justice’s Juvenile Crime Initiative. She founded CHILD Inc in 2000. In her free time she enjoys reading, hiking, art, and dancing to live music.
